Obtaining health insurance for an extended period of time away from home, i.e. over and beyond three months, can be a real headache.

Finding proper coverage for your boat is a somewhat simpler matter, albeit quite time consuming. Also, several companies require more than two crew for oceans crossings, which is a real problem for couples or sailors who like to be on their own. Therefore, we thought we would share with you, the ”Dreamers” at home and the ”Doers” at sea, our information on how to get in touch with the companies we chose to be covered with. Fortunately, we never had to submit any claims….

SIEGFRIED PREUSS GROUP HEALTH AND HULL INSURANCE

This is a reputable and well known German insurance company. It used to be that you had be be a member of the offshore sailing organization, Trans-Ocean in Cuxhaven, in order to qualify for their group health and hull insurance. Today, however, this is no longer necessary. Now, you may send your Group Health Insurance and Hull Insurance application directly to:

Unlike Lloyd’s of London, Siegfried Preuss does not require a minimum of three crew members for ocean crossings and insures couples as well as solo sailors. The insurance company is extremely thorough and requires detailed information on your vessel. However, they have a reputation of being efficient with respect to settling claims and are highly regarded by cruisers of all nationalities.

Siegfried Preuss also offers Third Party Liability Insurance for all its clients. The only exception is for vessels which sail under U.S. and Canadian flags. They may obtain such insurance from Lloyds of London underwriters

We carried the above combination of insurance during most of our offshore cruise. While we were in Europe, we were covered by Pantaneus. However, they do not insure boats registered in North America outside of European waters. Nor Siglar was registered in Vancouver up until the summer of 2001. Now she is registered in Norway.
